GARTH BROOKS – A SIGNATURE MOMENT

It’s become a tradition for any actor, artist, or renowned figure who views the Declaration of Independence exhibit at the National Archives to sign a copy of the historic document…and Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were given that opportunity, too! The National Archives Foundation was only too happy to have the biggest-selling musical artist in history put his own “John Hancock” on a copy of the Declaration. And he was happy to do so when asked!

While in Washington, DC for events with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Archives Foundation, Garth and Trisha were given a special opportunity to personally view this treasured document, kept safe for past and future generations inside the National Archives facilities.

“When you see the actual Declaration, you can’t help but cry,” Garth says. “Then, when you read there were only two copies made – one signed by all, which stayed here in the New World…and the other that only had John Hancock’s name on it (because everyone who signed it was viewed as a traitor and would be treated as such) was sent to the King of England.”

The Declaration of Independence’s completion and public reading – on July 4, 1776 – formally stated everything the 13 Colonies were fighting for in the Revolutionary War during which the fledgling United States of America won their collective freedom from British rule…and gave birth to a nation that would impact history from then on. Garth found himself in awe not only of the document…but of those who were brave enough to attach their signatures – and lives – to it.

“The last note on the Declaration signing [display] explains John Hancock wrote his name so large because he supposedly said, ‘I don’t want the king to have to put his spectacles on to see who signed it.’” Learning that part of the document’s story, Garth couldn’t help but smile and say, “THAT is so badass….”
In a year where all Americans are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence as a free nation, the documents at the foundation of its existence – the Constitution…Bill of Rights…and the Declaration of Independence – are taking on renewed meaning and significance…and that’s not lost on Garth.

“I LOVE this country,“ Garth shares. “It was courageous and defiant souls who gave us the freedom we have. And it will take souls like that to ensure our freedoms remain.”
