"President Carter, the legacy you and Miss Rosalynn have left us is as beautiful as the life you lived”

President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, and Garth Brooks turned to social media to pay tribute to his mentor and friend.

"President Carter, the legacy you and Miss Rosalynn have left us is as beautiful as the life you lived," Garth wrote. "Thank you for your lifetime of service to our country and the world. You inspired us not just by what you said but by what you built. We love you."

Mr. Carter was 100 years old.  A peanut farmer before becoming a politician, Mr. Carter finished his presidential term in 1981. He was the longest-lived president in United States history. His death came nearly two years after the Carter Center, the non-profit he founded with his wife Rosalynn, said he would not seek out further medical care after a series of medical crises.

Over the years, Mr. Carter won as much respect for his diplomacy and philanthropic work as he did through politics.  He was a Naval officer who studied nuclear physics and won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Carter was also the face of Habitat for Humanity, a cause that is close to Garth's heart.

Garth and Trisha have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for over a decade and hosted The Carter Work Project in 2024. The event brought together volunteers, future homeowners, and supporters to build 30 new homes in St. Paul, Minnesota.

"It's always and joy and an honor to spend the week in the middle of people loving people," Garth said at the time.

Mr. Carter's state funeral will be on January 9 at Washington National Cathedral. President Biden will deliver the eulogy. The service will end more than a week of ceremonies, including Mr. Carter being taken by motorcade to Atlanta, where he will lie for 36 hours at the Carter Center. He then will be flown to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state at the United States Capitol for a day and a half before the state funeral. Then, Mr. Carter will be flown back to Georgia and taken by motorcade to Plains, where he will be buried in the family compound.
