The 1991 history-making, Grammy winning Ropin’ The Wind reflected Garth’s passion and versatility, with hits ranging from the fiercely emotional "Shameless," premiered with a show-stopping CMA Awards Show performance, to blue-collar classics like "What She’s Doing Now" and rock-edged honky tonkers "Rodeo" and "Papa Loved Mama." Garth co-wrote six of the ten songs, including perennial favorite, "The River," which still gets more fan letters than any song he has recorded.
Ropin’ The Wind made chart history on September 28, 1991, when it entered the all-genre Billboard Top 200 Albums charts at #1. It has been certified by the RIAA for sales in excess of 14 million units. Although it was only Garth’s third album, by the end of 1991 his overall record sales accounted for one fourth of country music’s year-end sales. Ropin’ The Wind earned the 1992 Country Music Association Award for Album of the Year. NARM named it the Best Selling Album of the Year, and it was the Top Billboard 200 Album for 1992.
Ropin’ The Wind earned Garth his first Grammy award, for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, in 1992.
