Double Live is a 2-CD set containing 22 classic songs and 3 new cuts, over 100 minutes of music. The songs were recorded during Garth’s concert appearances from 1991-1998, although most were recorded during his 1996-98 world tour. At the time of its release, Double Live set a record for first-week sales by selling more than 1.08 million copies. Single release: “It’s Your Song,” top 5.
The set came in a variety of limited commemorative packages. While each 2-CD set contained the same exact recordings, consumers had several options regarding the look of their purchase. The artwork for each package, including booklet photos and special designs on the discs themselves, was retired after a run of 1 million copies, resulting in a completely different package for every million copies produced and shipped in the U.S. The cassette package was entirely different from those for the CD's. Each CD booklet also contains a diary of Garth's personal reflections on his career milestones. CD packages included: The First Edition, Central Park, Dublin, Ireland, World Tour II (96-98), Texas Stadium 1993, Reunion Arena 1991, and World Tour I (93-94).
CDs moved in lightening speeds when they went on sale. Garth’s label issued the following stats: Media Play in Rockford, Illinois reported selling over 300 albums when the album went on sale at midnight. Tower Records in Sacramento, California sold 400 copies in two hours. A Venture, California Sam Goody sold out of the CD in two hours. Gallery of Sound in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania sold 1000 copies on the first day. KFRG Radio in California asked CD buyers to bring canned goods. Over 8000 pounds of food was collected, and the Wherehouse sold out of all stock. American Music Awards, Favorite Album/country, 2000.
Garth was #1 on the 1998 Los Angeles Times Ultimate Top 10 of Music, combining sales and concert grosses.
With the release of Garth’s Wal-Mart exclusive, The Limited Series, Double Live has now been RIAA certified at 20 million.
